Houston Ballet’s new home on Preston Street will open in the spring of 2011.

Building on the Ballet. On March 10 at 11 a.m., Houston Ballet will hold a topping-off ceremony for its new $53 million Center for Dance, currently under construction at 601 Preston Street. A 20-foot steel beam will be placed on the west side of the 115,000 square-foot, six-story building, eight months after breaking ground in July 2009. Doubling the space of its current home at 1916 W. Gray, the ballet’s six-story building is designed to house nine dance studios, a black-box dance laboratory that seats 200, and artistic, administrative, and support facilities for Houston Ballet and its Ben Stevenson Academy. Set to open in spring 2011, the new structure will be the largest professional dance company facility of its kind constructed in the United States. houstonballet.org.

MyGayHouston_logoOn the Gay Web. In an effort to attract more gay travelers to Houston, the Greater Houston Convention and Visitors Bureau, with the help of Houston’s LGBT community, has launched a new website, mygayhouston.com. The decision to launch the site was made after research of the LGBT market by the U.S. Travel Association found that 85 percent of the LGBT community takes annual vacations, compared with a national average of 64 percent; LGBT travelers spend between $1500 and $3499 per person per vacation; and LGBT travelers spend $54 billion annually, about 10 percent of the total market.

The site profiles local LGBT residents and some of their favorite things to do in Houston, featuring LGBT events and attractions, restaurants, and bars that welcome gay travelers. mygayhouston.com.
