Mass. Gay Activists Fault Sen. Brown on Video
BOSTON – Gay and lesbian advocates are faulting US Sen. Scott Brown for refusing to participate in a video aimed at reassuring gay and lesbian youths that their lives will improve as they grow.
Every Democratic member of Massachusetts congressional delegation participated in the video. Brown, the lone Republican, did not appear.
Activists say Brown’s refusal sends the message that he doesn’t care about the harassment faced by young people. The video was part of a larger national campaign design to combat high rates of suicide among gay, lesbian, transgender and bisexual youth.
A spokesman for Brown said he believes all people regardless of sexual orientation should be treated with dignity and respect and has championed anti-bullying legislation.
The aide also said one of the activists behind the nationwide campaign has made crude written comments about Brown.
