A Note from the Publisher: February 2007

OutSmart‘s 14th anniversary.

The month of February is a time to celebrate the love of friends and family by acknowledging our most cherished partnerships.

At OutSmart, this is also the anniversary of this magazine. In February, we enter our 14th year of publishing. We couldn’t have grown into the publication we are today without the help of a supportive partnership with the community and our loyal family of advertisers that continually place trust in our marketing programs.

These partnerships help us continue our publishing mission to strive to produce quality editorial content that inspires people to take an active role in creating and maintaining a healthier and safer community.

In this issue, we are thrilled to debut a new educational alliance with AIDS Foundation Houston. Kelly McCann, CEO of AIDS Foundation Houston (and a former OutSmart staff member), begins a monthly features column on AIDS and community health. As Kelly writes, now more than ever is the time to continue the battle to end AIDS.

On a sad note, the Houston Voice, our city’s weekly GLBT newspaper, ceased publication in January.

The 33-year-old publication, which was purchased by Window Media almost nine years ago, cited declining revenue among other difficulties as the reasons for closing its doors.

Certainly, many community-based businesses face challenges today.

At OutSmart we are grateful to have vital collaborations to thrive on. These are great partnerships that we won’t take for granted.
