LGBT Veterans Sought for ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ Parade Entry

Ray Hill, considered by many to be the Godfather of Houston’s LGBT community due to his lifelong activism on behalf of gay equality, is calling for LGBT military veterans and active service members to join his contingent in the 2011 Houston LGBT Pride Parade. “Ray Hill, an old warhorse, is trying to muster the troops,” Hill told OutSmart. He encourages participants, regardless of discharge status, to appear in the June 23 parade with him in protest of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” According to Servicemembers Legal Defense Network, the law is responsible for the release of more than 14,000 service members since 1993. President Barack Obama signed the National Defense Authorization Act on May 27, 2010, that would lead to the repeal of DADT on December 22, 2010. However, DADT remains the law until the repeal is certified. Individuals interested in participating in Hill’s parade contingent are asked to log on to therayhill.com.—Nancy Ford
