Delma Cummings, 72, passed away November 26 at Methodist Hospital, following a lengthy battle against cancer. She was in the company of her niece, Sarah, and friends Barbara Williams and Carol Cordero at the time of her death.

Cummings made a career for 15 years of working with special-education students; she was also a 30-year employee of Southwestern Bell. A longtime member of the board of directors for Lesbians Over Age Fifty, or LOAF, Cummings also served as an outreach worker with Seniors Preparing for Rainbow Years, or SPRY, a program for LGBT seniors established by Montrose Counseling Center and Legacy Community Health Services offering mental health and support services for LGBT persons age 60 or older. She also volunteered with AssistHers and LHI-Houston.

In 2007, Cummings told OutSmart she wants to remind people is that some LGBT seniors need support. “Just because we turn 60 doesn’t mean we stop being gay.”

Cummings is survived by her partner Lou Ivy, her family, and her many friends. Funeral and memorial arrangements are currently pending.
