Maverick Welch Eyes District H Council Seat in Runoff Election

The special election on May 9 for the Houston City Council District H seat found openly gay candidate Maverick Welch headed for a runoff election with Houston police officer Ed Gonzalez. Gonzalez garnered 31 percent of the May vote; Welch received almost 27 percent of the vote.

“The groundswell of support for Maverick on election day is proof positive that he has the institutional and grassroots following needed to defeat Gonzalez in the runoff,” said Houston Stonewall Young Democrats president, Brandon Webb. “The Houston Stonewall Young Democrats are proud to be included in Welsh’s vital volunteer base.”

The election is being held to fill the seat of former city councilman Adrian Garcia, who was elected Harris County sheriff in November 2008. The runoff election is set for June 13. – by Nancy Ford
