Houston to host National Gay Flag Football championship in 2011
Houston has been chosen as the site of the National Gay Flag Football League’s Gay Bowl XI, scheduled October 7–9, 2011.
As many as 28 teams from throughout the country are expected to compete in this national tournament played on the eight lighted fields of Houston Sportsplex in southwest Houston.
“Houston is excited to be chosen to host this great event. It is a chance for us to showcase our city’s athletic and hospitality venues, while having a positive economic impact, if just for a short time, by another segment of the LGBT community,” said Russell Garrison, chairman of the local organizing committee. “We are confident the hardworking members of the committee and our many volunteers will make Gay Bowl XI the most fabulous one yet.”
Houston’s local team is the Houston Hurricanes, which formed in 2006 and competed in their first Gay Bowl that same year, as well as in Gay Bowl VIII in Utah in 2008 and Gay Bowl IX in Washington DC in 2009. This year, the Houston Hurricanes expanded to two scrimmage squads for Gay Bowl X in Phoenix.
In addition to the multiple flag football games, the 2011 tournament weekend also offers accompanying parties as well as a Sunday night closing and awards ceremony. — Nancy Ford
