‹High achieving college students in the Houston area will soon have a chance to learn valuable life-saving skills from the man who helped save the life of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. Daniel Hernandez, an intern for Giffords at the time of the shooting, will address members of The National Society of Collegiate Scholars when it holds its Leadership Summit in Houston in June (http://www.nscs.org/programs/upcoming-events/national-leadership-summit).

Hernandez, who wrote about the experience in his book “They Call Me a Hero,” will also lead a community service event for NSCS members. With help from the American Red Cross-Texas Gulf Coast Region, more than 200 members will learn CPR and first aid skills Hernandez used on Giffords right after she was shot in Tuscon, Ariz. in 2011.

“I am looking for to this important opportunity to connect with some of the country’s highest achieving college students. I know, in addition to scholarship, that NSCS is dedicated to the ideals of leadership and service. The day that my boss Gabrielle Giffords was shot I was called into service. You never know when it will happen, Šthat’s why everyone should learn these first aid skills and CPR,” Hernandez says.

Rice University, Houston Community College, and Texas Southern University all have NSCS chapters and their members will be attending the events.
NSCS (www.nscs.org) exists to recognize and elevate high-achievers; it’s a recognized non-profit organization at 300 campuses across the country.

The Leadership Summit will offer NSCS members the opportunity to be engaged in discussions surroundin leadership, personal and professional development, brand identity, social entrepreneurship and more.

Other speakers at the Summit will include Jeremy Johnson on June 21. He is the co-founder and Chief Marketing Officer of 2U Inc., which partners with top-tier universities to deliver rigorous, selective graduate degree and undergraduate for-credit programs online. Attendees will also hear from Michael Dorsey, a contestant from the NBC-TV show “Biggest Loser” and founder, One Click Movement, which encourages everyone to discover and overcome that “one thing” that seems to be holding them back.
