All those people who say there’s never anything for lesbians to do in Houston need to pay closer attention.
This Saturday, September 15, Girl Jam’s Julie Mabry and Sarah Alexander, AKA DJ Saratonin, bring the Modern Love Tour to Houston, to the delight of party-loving lesbians.
“This weekend is going to be amazing!” says Mabry. “It’ll be a great way to end the summer.”
Uh Huh Her’s Camila Gray and Leisha Hailey (“Alice” on Showtime’s popular cable series, The L Word) headline the September 15 pool party at Roak (3320 Kirby Drive), providing a special DJ set. DJ Saratonin, DJ Jack Kennedy, DJ Kim Anh and DJ Grrl Parts also spin. Whitney Mixter and Sara Bettencourt, cast members from Showtime’s reality series, The Real L Word, are also scheduled to attend.
“This will be the fist time Houston sees ‘Alice’ deejay,” Mabry adds. “I hope everyone is ready!”
The weekend of events begins at The Drake with a Friday Kickoff party, followed by the pool party at Roak beginning 12 noon on Saturday, with an after-party at Avant Garden (411 Westheimer Road). The weekend concludes Sunday evening with a special performances by Paige Lewisa nd Yello Echo at The Usual (5519 Allen Street).
It’s the close of a busy summer for Girl Jam party producer, Julie Mabry. In addition to hosting stand-alone bashes like the Modern Love tour and various Girl Jam events, Mabry also hosts a weekly Sunday Funday party at Avant Garden featuring local female acoustic musicians like Paige Lewis, full bands like Elect Trick City, and deejayed by Nina Lombardo and others. The Sunday parties began as a fundraising effort to assist Kristene Chapa, victim of an assault in Portland, Texas in June in which her girlfriend, Mollie Olgin, was murdered. Patrons of Mabry’s parties donated nearly $2000 to assist with Chapa’s recovery, with more donations coming, Mabry says.
Tickets to Modern Love weekend start at $20, with limited VIP tables available. modernlovehouston.eventbrite.com.
