Key West to Turn Up the Heat Aug. 18-21

Key West is set to sizzle for a long weekend of gay adult fun Thursday through Sunday, Aug. 18-21, during the annual Tropical Heat festival. Tropical Heat offers four days of fever-pitch revelry and more than a dozen events in the island city whose openness and respect for diversity have made it a world-renowned gay vacation destination.

Comedian Paul J. Williams, acclaimed for his work with LOGO television and RSVP Vacations’ cruises, is to headline the entertainment.

The heat wave begins Thursday, Aug. 18, with a 6-9 p.m. clothing-optional kick-off party at Big Ruby’s Resort, 409 Appelrouth Lane, followed by a special drag show and dance party at Aqua Nightclub, 711 Duval St.

Festival attendees can make a splash Friday at a clothing-optional afternoon pool party at the Bourbon St. Pub, 724 Duval St., and then heat up the night with dance and themed parties at local resorts and clubs.

Saturday’s planned highlights include a guided trolley tour showcasing the sites, history and culture associated with Key West’s flourishing LGBT community.

Temptations to follow include a sizzling pool party at Island House, 1129 Fleming St.; the Howling Happy Hour at multiple venues and a pair of parties that prove temperatures can rise after the sun goes down.

Sunday’s schedule combines daytime fun with nighttime comedy. A 50s-themed Motown pool party is set for noon to 4 p.m. at Alexander’s Guesthouse, 1118 Fleming St. Also on tap are a clothing-optional pool party at Island House and “gay bingo” at the 801 Bar, 801 Duval St.

Tropical Heat’s schedule culminates at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, when Williams showcases his sidesplitting humor in a one-man show at Aqua Nightclub.

Revelers can purchase an all-admission pass or pay individual event admissions.
