Houston GLBT Caucus Makes Endorsements, Parker Gains More Supporters

The Houston Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Political Caucus met August 5 to endorse candidates in the 2009 Houston municipal elections as well as Houston Independent School District board of trustee elections.

Candidates were screened by the caucus for their support of LGBT equality and were then endorsed by majority vote of the membership. Endorsed candidates include: Ronald Green for Houston City Controller, Lane Lewis for Houston City Council District A, Anne Clutterbuck for Houston City Council District C, Wanda Adams for Houston City Council District D, Michael Laster for Houston City Council District F, Ed Gonzales for Houston City Council District H, James Rodriguez for Houston City Council District I, Herman Litt for Council At Large Position 1, Sue Lovell for Council At Large Position 2, Melissa Noriega for Council At Large Position 3, Noel Freeman for Council At Large Position 4, Jolanda Jones for Council At Large Position 5, and Alma L. Lara for HISD Trustee District I. No endorsements were made for Districts B, E, or G.

The caucus previously endorsed Houston city controller Annise D. Parker for the office of Houston’s mayor. In August, Parker, currently in her third and term-limited final term as Houston’s city controller, added Service Employees International Union, the Houston Organization of Public Employees and Harris County Democrats, and the Unite Here hospitality workers group to her growing list of endorsing organizations. – by Nancy Ford
