Archaeology Now presents “One, Two and Beyond: Gender in the Ancient World”

Tuesday, February 5, 2019 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

$20

Archaeology Now, the Archaeological Institute of America (AIA) – Houston Society, along with Family Tree DNA and KPMG present “One, Two and Beyond: Gender in the Ancient World.”
How many genders were part of cultures in the past? Archaeologists have found that many societies in the ancient world saw gender as more than two options. Drawing from the long history of the Aztec, Zapotec and Maya, archaeologists have developed an understanding of gender as performance, not merely an innate essence. Gender had to be cultivated, developed, practiced and displayed. How these societies understood gender and how they treated people who occupied differing gender statuses offer lessons for us today.
Join Rosemary Joyce, Ph.D., Associate Dean, Graduate Division, University of California, Berkley for this fascinating talk.
