On Katrina anniversary, Houston Center Raises Funds for New Orleans Center

On the fifth-year anniversary of the catastrophic aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the Houston GLBT Community Center will raise funds for the LGBT Community Center of New Orleans at the Houston center’s monthly charitable bingo game. The funds will be raised through the sale of tickets for the raffle that is one of the features of First Saturday Queer Bingo, a Center program. This month’s bingo will will take place on Saturday, September 4, beginning at 4:30 p.m.

First Saturday Queer Bingo, which is open to the public, is held in the private room at One’s A Meal restaurant (812 Westheimer).

Houston GLBT Community Center volunteers will sell raffle tickets ($1 each) during the afternoon. Doors open at 4 p.m., and games begin at 4:30. At the end of the First Saturday Queer Bingo event, the New Orleans center will receive half of the amount raised through the sale of the tickets; the holder of ticket that is drawn will receive the other half of the proceeds in Texas Lottery tickets.

“We are honored to help our friends at the LGBT Community Center of New Orleans in this way,” Houston GLBT Community Center president Tim Brookover says. “We were very involved in the efforts to assist residents of New Orleans, Louisiana, and the central Gulf Coast who came to Houston after the hurricane. On this significant anniversary of the catastrophe, we wanted to help in some additional way.”

The Houston GLBT Community Center will mail a check for the raffle proceeds to the LGBT Community Center of New Orleans.

The pricing for First Saturday Queer Bingo is $9 for three 3 sheets (each sheet has 3 cards), $15 for 6 sheets, and $20 for 9 sheets. Daubers are $1 each.

Proceeds from First Saturday Queer Bingo support the John Lawrence and Tyrone Garner Scholarship Fund of the Houston GLBT Community Center and Center programming.
