Pride Superstar to Crown a Winner This Week

by Megan Smith

Dominic Di Felice, the musical-theater crooner; Jon Sykora, a Glee-inspired charmer; and Andy Shaw, a neo-soul standout compete for the 2012 Pride Super star

The competition is getting fierce as the contestants of Houston’s premiere singing competition, Pride Superstar, prepare for this Thursday’s finale and crowning.

Will Dominic Di Felice, the musical-theater crooner, Jon Sykora, the Glee-inspired charmer, or Andy Shaw, the neo-soul standout, take home the title of the first male Pride Superstar winner since 2009?

At this week’s competition, the contestants each perform a personal song selection and an anthem that represents the PRIDE theme. The trio is joined this week by guest performer Tamar Davis, native Houstonian and Grammy nominee for her duet with Prince.

Hosted by Mix 96.5 personality Blake Hayes, the finale line-up also includes a performance by 2009 Pride Superstar AJ Cabrera and Nina Lombardo, GLBT Community Standout. There are LiveNation ticket giveaways to Houston’s first Pride dance party, Wonderland Houston, which features DJ Michael Tank, Jenna Drey, cirque aerialists, and more!

The judges’ panel includes Tianna Hall, former titleholder of the Miss America Organization, Joey Guerra, music critic for the Houston Chronicle, and Phoenix, producer for the Roula & Ryan Morning Show on 104.1 FM KRBE, on-air DJ, and singer/songwriter.

The lucky winner of this year’s competition receives more than $5,000 in prizes, including studio time at the Grammy-winning Urbana Recording Studios; a cruise courtesy the Gay & Lesbian Yellow Pages and gayribbean.com; $500 cash, a VIP platinum card, and a VIP party from Charles Armstrong Investments; an entry in the Pride parade; and a showcase at the Pride festival.

All three finalists perform at this year’s Pride festival on Saturday, June 23. The finale begins Thursday, June 21, at 10 p.m. at South Beach (810 Pacific St.) and is free of charge!
