Parker Wins Second Term as Mayor

HOUSTON – Houston Mayor Annise Parker has won a second term and avoided a runoff.

Parker held off five challengers in a race that drew about 13 percent of Houston’s registered voters to the polls on Tuesday.

Parker says the economy was also a tough opponent.

Parker in 2009 was elected the first openly gay mayor of Houston, the nation’s fourth-largest city with a population of nearly 2.1 million.
