The Center Forms New Spanish-Language HIV Support Group

The Houston GLBT Community Center board of directors has announced the formation of a new Spanish-language support group for individuals affected by HIV/AIDS.  Centro Grupo Latino now meets on the second Saturday of every month beginning at 4 p.m. at The Center (Historic Dow School, 1900 Kane – Silver Street entrance).

Chris Escalante facilitates Centro Grupo Latino. Chris is also the facilitator of the Center HIV Support Group, which meets every Thursday.  In addition to his volunteer role with The Center, Chris is a member of the Ryan White Planning Council and the Latino HIV Task Force and an experienced advocate for people with HIV in both Houston and San Antonio.

There is no charge to participate in Centro Grupo Latino.  Individuals interested in the group, or who have questions, may contact Chris directly at [email protected] <mailto:[email protected]> or contact The Center.

“The Center is thrilled to provide this new program for our friends and neighbors looking for a Spanish-language support group,” Center president Tim Brookover says. “Some individuals in the community approached Chris Escalante about creating a group at The Center, and he offered to facilitate the group.  Chris is the ideal person to do this important service work.”

Centro Grupo Latino joins the roster of support groups offered by The Center  These groups also include the Center HIV Support Group (meets every Thursday at 6 p.m.), the Center Coming Out Group (meets on the first and third Wednesday at 7 p.m.), and the Lesbian Discussion Hour (meets on the fourth Friday at 6:30 p.m.).  There is no charge to participate in Center support groups.
