Volunteers Pave Way for AssistHers’ Popularity

Sister-in-chief: Lavita Marks, AssistHers’ president, believes the success of the nearly 15-year-old group is due to the generous and enthusiastic spirit of its volunteers.

For the third consecutive year, OutSmart readers have named AssistHers as their Gayest & Greatest Community Organization.

“It’s got to be because of our volunteers,” says AssistHers president Lavita Marks, regarding the group’s series of wins. “This year alone, our volunteers made life more manageable for more than 35 lesbians in dire need of assistance. You don’t see that kind of compassion and enthusiasm every day.”

In 2011, Marks leads the group into its 15th anniversary year of providing non-medical care to lesbians with life-threatening illnesses, like basic house cleaning, errand-running, and transportation to doctors’ appointments.

“And let’s face it, we couldn’t do any of these things without our incredible funders,” Marks adds. “We appreciate ever dollar that our community trusts us with. Having people vote for us as their favorite organization each year is icing on the cake.”

Marks encourages women to explore AssistHers’ many volunteer opportunities at one of their “Second Saturday” meet-and-greet sessions held each month, 9:30 a.m.–noon at Bering Memorial United Methodist Church. AssistHers also presents the 10th anniversary celebration of its hallmark fundraiser, Decadent Desserts and More, at South Beach on Oct. 10, 4 p.m. assisthers.org • 713/521-4628. — Nancy Ford
