Obituary: Marie Mariano

Died. Marie Mariano, registered nurse, veteran, and friend to many, died Christmas Eve. Marie was born in Idaho in 1921 and began her professional life working on the railroad before finding her ultimate career in nursing.

As a nurse, Marie traveled via dogsled in Alaska to deliver Eskimo babies, served in the Army as a second lieutenant during World War II and the Korean War, and helped establish the neuro nurse unit at Methodist Hospital where she worked for 36 years. Later in life she lovingly volunteered at CASA, a Houston hospice for individuals with HIV and AIDS.

Marie was also active in local women’s organizations, including AssistHers and Lesbians Over Age Fifty. Sarah, her partner of nearly 30 years, preceded her in death in 1987.
