Deputies say New Mexico mom beat gay daughter
LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) — A New Mexico mother is facing a hate crime charge after authorities say she physically and sexually abused her daughter because she is gay.
The Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Office said 40-year-old Magdo Haro was arrested Tuesday on charges of second-degree criminal sexual penetration and third-degree child abuse.
The Las Cruces Sun-News reports a complaint says the 17-year-old girl alleges she and Haro had been arguing about the girl’s sexuality for around a week.
The complaint says Haro threatened to insert the stick of a plunger and a hanger inside her daughter “so she would know what it was like to have sex with a woman.”
Authorities say Haro eventually coerced her daughter into lewd acts.
Haro was later released on a $25,000 secured bond.
It was not known if Haro had an attorney.
