RI Speaker: Civil Unions a Difficult Decision

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Speaker of the state House of Representatives said pursuing civil union legislation rather than gay marriage was one of the most difficult decisions of his career.

Gordon Fox tells WPRO radio he supports marriage equality for gay couples, but that civil unions are a “step in the right direction.”

Fox, who is gay, said he realizes there is disappointment in the gay community. But he urged gay rights activists and other supporters of gay marriage to “stay focused on the fight.”

The House passed gay marriage legislation but it faced obstacles in the Senate and Fox dropped the effort in favor of pursuing civil unions as a legislative compromise.
