Kin of NY Lawmakers Have Same-Sex Weddings
WILLSBORO, N.Y. – Family members of two Republican Assembly members from northern New York have celebrated same-sex weddings, joining hundreds of couples who have married in the month since gay marriage became legal in the state.
The Adirondack Daily Enterprise reports that Glenn Sayward, son of Assemblywoman Teresa Sayward, married his longtime partner Ben last weekend in a ceremony at their home in Willsboro.
The guest list included Assemblywoman Janet Duprey, who also attended a same-sex marriage ceremony that weekend for her niece and her partner.
Both politicians told the Enterprise that seeing their gay family members legally married in New York was the culmination of a long personal and political struggle. Both went against the majority of their Republican party and have been outspoken in their support of same-sex marriage.
