Late Gay Teen’s Mom Sues Calif. School District

TEHACHAPI, Calif.  – The mother of a central California teenager who committed suicide after years of anti-gay bullying is suing her late son’s school district for not working to stop the harassment.

Wendy Walsh filed suit against the Tehachapi Unified School District on Tuesday, just four days after officials from the federal departments of justice and education concluded that district employees did not adequately investigate or respond to complaints about 13-year-old Seth Walsh’s experience.

The Bakersfield Californian reports that Walsh is seeking compensation for wrongful death damages, medical expenses and punitive damages.

Tehachapi Unified’s school board rejected a damages claim from Walsh earlier this year, paving the way for her lawsuit. The defendants named in the case include the district’s superintendent, and the principal, vice principal and four teachers at Jacobsen Middle School, the school Seth attended.
