‘Dog Day Afternoon’
On September 21, the 40th anniversary of its release in theaters, director Sidney Lumet’s Dog Day Afternoon will be available as a new anniversary-edition Blu-ray. Al Pacino stars as Sonny Wortzik, a man attempting to rob a bank to pay for (among other things) sex-reassignment surgery for his partner, Leon Shermer (Chris Sarandon). A media circus ensues. The Academy Award-nominated film is superb, as is the acting. Frank Pierson’s screenplay won an Oscar. Available September 21 from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment (wbshop.com). —Troy Carrington
