Bitter Eden

This beautiful book occurs in the most unlovely environment—a prisoner of war camp during World War II. Tom, Douglas, and Danny are involved in a three-way that could not have occurred anywhere else. This book is so many things; a love story that never uses the word love. An accounting of love and life flourishing in the horrific conditions of German and Italian POW camps. Writing that stays upright on the tight wire between over-stylized crap and maudlin autobiographies. Written by an author who had actually experienced the time, the place, and maybe the story, this book was originally published in Great Britain in 2002. Picador (picadorusa.com). —Angel Curtis
