Died
Jeannette Vaughn, co-founder and “Imperial Queen Mother” of the Royal Sovereign and Imperial Court of the Single Star social and fundraising group, died on October 15 at her home. She was 71 and had been suffering from breast cancer.

Vaughn helped raise money for local organizations including AIDS Foundation Houston, Legacy Community Health Services, Colt 45’s AIDS Trouble Fund, and PWA-Holiday Charities. In 1998, she helped orchestrate a mass commitment ceremony for same-sex couples at Resurrection Metropolitan Community Church. Vaughn was elected Female Grand Marshal of the GLBT Pride Parade in 1996.

Vaughn was preceded in death by life partner Dot Thompson. She is survived by her son, Bill Thompson of Memphis, Tennessee, and lifetime friend, Lonnie McElwain of Houston.

A memorial service honoring Vaughn was held at Bell Park on October 27. Vaughn’s family requests that donations in her name be made to AssistHers (1116 Jackson Blvd., Houston, 77006; www.assisthers.org).
