YANKTON, S.D. (AP) — An openly gay Yankton teenager has filed a discrimination complaint against the fast food restaurant where he worked alleging he was forced to wear a name tag with a homophobic slur.
The 16-year-old Tyler Brandt filed the complaint this week with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. It states that Taco John’s of Yankton and Taco John’s International violated the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
Restaurant officials have previously disputed the boy’s version of events and said the incident in June has been blown out of proportion.
Brandt says he resigned a day after the incident. He says he kept the name tag as evidence.
Brandt said he wore the tag because he feared he’d be fired if he refused. He says a supervisor also yelled the slur at him.
