Often associated with misfortune, the number 13 is proving to be rather lucky for these 13 winners of OutSmart magazine’s 2013 Gayest & Greatest awards. After all, we did survive the apocalyptic prediction at the end of the thirteen cycles of the Mayan calendar (see OutSmart, Gayest & Greatest, October 2012). Unlucky 13, we’re not buying what you’re selling. There’s something special about the number, perhaps only in that triskaidekaphobes give the rest of us some breathing room. We thumb our nose at the superstition, embracing all that makes 13 a prime number in our book. Tell that to Betsy Ross. Bar mitzvah, anyone? Who doesn’t remember counting down the days to becoming a bona-fide teenager—and isn’t a baker’s dozen always sweeter than just twelve? In fact, even in this very superstitious month of 2013, we say, “Bring on the black cats and the broken mirrors.” We’ll step on a crack if we feel like it, or walk under a ladder. We’ll say “Good luck” and scream “Macbeth” in a theater. Bring it on, Halloween! You don’t scare us!
