TOUCH OF THE POET
In May, Lesa Jackson launched the Scorpio Rising Poetry Reading Club, which meets on the second Saturday of the month at 1 p.m. at the Houston GLBT Community Center. “Every meeting has been very exciting,” says Jackson, who opens meetings by reading some of her original poems. Meetings conclude with an open-mic time for poets and singers. “My ultimate goal is to publish a poetry club book filled with the poems that we create in our meetings,” Jackson says. “I’m trying to make this a positive thing for the GLBT community.” She and club assistant Damian Harris are even designing a Scorpio Rising shirt. In August, the club begins a reading circle, starting with the E. Lynn Harris novel Abide With Me. Details: LJScorpio [email protected].

AUCTION WITH A TWIST
Local entertainer Gilbert Perez, in the guise of “world famous Cuban drag queen” Venezuela Maria Concepcion de los Angeles Valdez Valejo Gonzales, presides as auctioneer at the July 12 DiverseWorks summer auction, Luck of the Draw VI, which goes like this: Twenty dollars gets you in the door to examine nearly 200 works of art. An extra $100 gives you the chance to choose a piece when your auction number is drawn. But you might want to wear your Nikes with that chic summer cocktail attire: You have 15 seconds to choose your quarry after your number is selected. The amount of artwork donated determines the number of chances sold, ensuring that everyone who buys a ticket will go home with art. • Details: 713/223-8346, www.diverseworks.org.
