WiA Art-Happy Hour with Cecilia Villanueva
Thursday, October 19, 2017 @ 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm
Join Women in Architecture Houston at Archway Gallery Thursday, October 19th for an Art-Happy Hour with Mexican artist Cecilia Villanueva. Her solo exhibition, Embraced by the Void interprets the vacuum in architecture through paintings which appear clean, cool, and almost clinical. They are mostly aerial views from what is seen when traveling by airplane, or views from Google Earth.
Artist Discussion at 6p. Light refreshments will be served.
ABOUT THE ARTIST:
As the child of the accomplished and prolific Mexican architect Luis Villanueva, daughter Cecilia was immersed in the language and drawings of buildings and their structure. The world of architecture and in particular the blue ink of blueprints made an indelible impression on her.
For the past 15 years, the artist has created paintings inspired by and depicting architecture from the past and present. On her city walks she noticed that architecture today is no longer about solid buildings; instead, it is more about voids and a sense of vacancy. After several years of observing these immaterial spaces in architecture, she decided to make an imaginary journey into the insubstantial void.
Cecilia Villanueva reflects upon open spaces using few lines and very few architectural structures, creating compositions which verge on the void. Through her artwork, she creates a path to dark yet necessary spaces; a vacuum in a world without limits.
Embraced by the Void opens at Archway Gallery October 7th and will be on view until November 2nd.
