ABOUT THE TALK
“Archives of Memory: Transnational Vietnamese Cinemas from Past to Present”
Presented in conjunction with the exhibition by The Propeller Group, Professor Lan Duong’s talk looks at the past and present modes of a national Vietnamese cinema, one that has been transformed by war and revolution as well as peace and transnational collaboration. More broadly speaking, it explores the different facets of art, politics and cinema that mark the cultural landscape of a postwar, postsocialist Viet Nam.
ABOUT THE SPEAKERS
Lan Duong is a Professor in the Bryan Singer Division of Cinema and Media Studies at the University of Southern California. Duong’s book Treacherous Subjects: Gender, Culture, and Trans-Vietnamese Feminism was published in 2012 by Temple University Press. She is working on a second monograph entitled, Archives of Memory: Transnational Vietnamese Cinemas from Past to Present.
Duy Lap Nguyen is an assistant professor of world cultures and literatures at the University of Houston. Nguyen’s current research explores works by the Vietnamese philosopher Trần Đức Thảo and develops a reading of Thảo’s materialist critique of phenomenology. A second project, titled “The Postcolonial Present: Redemption and Revolution in Twentieth-Century Vietnamese Culture and History,” examines Vietnamese cinema, literature, and mass culture from the Vietnam War era.
