“Nick Benton’s Gay Science” was a newspaper and online column that I looked forward to for far too short a time. In the volume Extraordinary Hearts, we are treated to a collection of 100 of Benton’s fine thought pieces spanning the years 2010–2012. Reading these columns provides the all-too-rare pleasure of “listening” to a first-rate thinker who writes with “voice and volume.” His no-holds-barred literary style—where all topics were fair game and political correctness was rarely in evidence—nevertheless reminds us of what being a thoughtful gay person is all about.
