The Revelations of Jude Connor
Robin Reardon’s prose is that quiet kind of storytelling that lets you see: see the place, see the character, see the issues, see the pain. Jude is trying to grow up with a deck that is stacked against him. People in his strongly fundamentalist faith-identified community approve of him and support him, just so long as he is heterosexual. As he grows, he struggles to find a place for his real self. Along the way are a cast of characters almost Dickensonian in nature and a sense of real that makes you feel as if a friend were sharing their life. Kensington (kensingtonbooks.com). —Angel Curtis
