RNC To Hold Winter Meeting in North Carolina

by CNN Political Unit

(CNN)—Reince Priebus, chairman of the Republican National Committee, announced Tuesday the party will holds its annual winter meeting in Charlotte, North Carolina, the same city where Democrats gathered for their national convention in September.

At the RNC meeting in January, the group will vote on the chairmanship position. Priebus has told members he intends to run for another term, and sources say he will likely win re-election despite the party’s losses this cycle.

Priebus began his tenure at the RNC in January 2011, taking the position from then-chair Michael Steele. A former head of the Wisconsin Republican Party, Priebus is credited as a successful fundraiser for the national group who has helped turn around the organization’s management.

Unlike most states, North Carolina saw big Republican gains this cycle, most notably a blue-to-red flip in the presidential election. The GOP also picked up the governor’s office and three House seats, and the state made headlines in May for passing a constitutional amendment that bans same-sex marriage.
