Davis Schools Sued Over Policy On Two Moms Book

SALT LAKE CITY (AP)—The American Civil Liberties Union says it’s suing Davis School District for limiting student access to a library book about a lesbian couple raising children.

District parent and plaintiff Tina Weber says she was shocked that some people could decide whether other parents’ children could check out the picture book titled In Our Mothers’ House.

The book tells the story of three adopted children growing up with two mothers. District officials require parents to sign a permission slip before students can check out the book, citing state law which prohibits advocacy of homosexuality in its curriculum.

The ACLU argues the library book isn’t instructional material, and says the subject matter does not constitute advocacy of homosexuality.

District spokesman Chris Williams says parents’ rights have never been curtailed by the policy.
