The Purple Shroud

Written by Stella Duffy
Reviewed by Angel Curtis

The Purple Shroud completes Stella Duffy’s magnificent fictional account of the Empress Theodora. While not a “gay” book, this story of a strong woman, co-ruler of Constantinople at a time when she should have remained an entertainer, a prostitute, and a lover of women, inspires us all. Beautifully and evocatively written, Duffy’s tale of emperors, empresses, eunuchs, illicit affairs, and, above all, politics, is an enchanting and welcome read.
