Or Communists.” Confirmed bachelor Oliver Ott is just one of 11 characters—maybe not even the most eccentric—who gets a whole chapter devoted to him in this first-rate novel set at a fictional English-language newspaper in Rome. Is Oliver gay? That’s left to the reader, but what I can say is the book is a marvelously structured, lovingly rendered epitaph to newspaper journalism as it used to be. —Review: Donalevan Maines
