Music in Darkness at the Rothko Chapel
Tuesday, May 2, 2017 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
Free
Ever wonder what it would be like to experience live music performed in total darkness? Find out at the Rothko Chapel.
At 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 2, the local nonprofit is set to host Music in Darkness, a performance of “in vain,” by Austrian composer George Friedrich Haas. Most of the piece is played in complete darkness, with performers playing from memory.
The event is free and open to the public, with a suggested donation of $10. The Rothko Chapel is located at 3900 Yupon.
Praised by the New York Times as a ‘masterpiece’ and The Guardian as ‘a monumental work,’ this will be the Texas premiere of ‘in vain.’
The demanding piece will be performed by Loop38 – a local chamber ensemble comprised entirely of Houston transplants – as part of their debut season.
Born in eastern Austria, Haas is an internationally acclaimed composer. He serves as professor of music, composition at Columbia University. His work synthesizes the Austrian orchestral tradition with groundbreaking and experimental composition.
