During the pandemic, queer Houston artist Edward Lane McCartney remained busy crafting, repairing, and refashioning old jewelry that was brought to him by clients. Frequently fixing up various jewelry items, McCartney participated in what was to become an unanticipated trend throughout this time; he began ruminating over the source of the pieces and what the transformation of each piece into something new would mean to its recipient. Naturally, McCartney began his own sentimental journey, creating his very own jewelry box and delineating and reserving pieces for himself from his personal stash. Surveying through decades worth of stones and various materials inspired McCartney with ideas and techniques that he wanted to revisit, thereby sparking the inspiration for each of the series in Jewel Box, A Case for Personal Adornment. Opening event October 22 from noon – 6pm.
