Austin School District Cancels Play Performances

AUSTIN, Texas (AP)—Austin school district officials have canceled the staging for students at an elementary school of a play about two male penguin parents given a fertilized egg who raise the hatchling.

And Then Came Tango was written by Emily Freeman, a graduate theater student at the University of Texas. It’s based on the story of Roy and Silo, two real penguins at New York’s Central Park Zoo who were given the egg to hatch, and Tango, their hatchling.

The Austin American-Statesman reports UT students performed the play for second-graders at Austin’s Lee Elementary School. District officials then raised concerns about age appropriateness and canceled further performances. It was the first time the Austin Independent School District had canceled a UT performance.

Freeman says the play is “about different families.”
