NJ Man Charged with Harassing Gay Neighbors

NEWARK, N.J. – A Newark man has been charged with a hate crime for allegedly harassing a gay couple that lived next door to him.

Douglas Brown was arrested Thursday.

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn Murray says the 36-year-old Brown began harassing his former neighbors in Newark’s Ironbound section in May. She says he called them homophobic names, putting oil on their home, destroying property and slashing their tires, among other incidents.

He faces harassment, bias intimidation and criminal mischief charges.

Prosecutors did not immediately know who is representing Brown.

He was being transported to the Essex County Correctional Facility Thursday evening and was to be held on $25,000 bail.
