Maine Activist to be Honored at White House

PORTLAND, Maine – A 17-year-old Maine high school student is going to be honored at the White House for supporting gay, lesbian and bisexual friends.

Kaleigh Colson joined Portland High School’s Gay-Straight-Transgender Alliance three years ago after watching one of her classmates be taunted with homophobic slurs.

Colson will be honored on June 29 by President Barack Obama along with several dozen other youths from across the country for their work in the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.

The Portland Press Herald says that as co-president of the Gay, Lesbian, Straight and Transgender Education Network of Southern Maine, Colson, who is heterosexual, has led numerous events to promote equality, dialogue and safe school environments for gay and transgender classmates.
