PFLAG Offers Local and National Scholarships

In the last six years, Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) has awarded over $150,000 in scholarship money to more than 115 students via its National Scholarship Program. This year the group has announced it will award up to three $5000, three $2500, and ten $1000 scholarships awarded in conjunction with the newly launched Cultivating Respect Safe Schools Program, which rewards hard work and leadership in the next generation.

The applicant must be a graduating senior entering higher education for the first time in 2009; those who graduated in 2008 and took a year off are still eligible to apply. Completed applications must be postmarked by March 13, 2009. For other criteria, log on to pflag.org.

Scholarships in the Houston area are awarded by the PFLAG/HATCH Youth Scholarship Foundation. Deadline is May 1 each year, with awards presented at the July meeting of PFLAG Houston. For local scholarship information, log on to pflaghouston.org/scholarship. – by Nancy Ford
