St. Louis Suburb Registering Domestic Partnerships

UNIVERSITY CITY, Mo. – University City Clerk Joyce Pumm says only three couples took advantage of a new law allowing domestic partners to register with the city.

The law took effect Wednesday. Two sets of gay men and one lesbian couple registered.

KMOX reports that Pumm says the law gives unmarried couples, both homosexual and heterosexual, the same rights as married couples at University City facilities. For example, the couples will be able to make medical decisions for each other or pay a family rate at the city’s recreation center.

Pumm says the law is society recognizing that the couples should be honored as a couple.

The registration fee is $45 per couple.
