ROCO In Concert: Feels Like Home

ROCO launches its 21st season and Albert and Margaret Alkek Foundation In Concert Series with Feels Like Home—a back-to-back concert weekend led by Artistic Partner Delyana Lazarova. Featuring guest concertmaster Margaret Batjer (LACO), the season opens with three world premieres and a powerful symphony rediscovered, on Friday, September 26, 7:30 pm, at Miller Outdoor Theatre and Saturday, September 27, 5:00 pm, at The Church of St. John the Divine.
ROCO Principal Clarinetist Nathan Williams steps into the spotlight in a new clarinet concertino by Season 21 Composer-In-Residence Kevin Lau titled At the Still Point of the Turning World, inspired by Williams’ work in hospice care as ROCO’s first Musicians with a Mission Manager. The orchestra then dives into GRAMMY-winning composer Starr Parodi’s Rip Tide, a newly commissioned work shaped by her personal story of loss and resilience. Composer Heather Schmidt writes an uplifting tribute to real-life husky rescues in Husky Chronicles, premiering in partnership with local shelters and rescue organizations. The concert concludes with Symphony No. 4 in B minor, the work of a pioneering yet little-known composer, and Beethoven contemporary, Emilie Mayer.
This performance will also be livestreamed free at ROCO.org, Facebook, YouTube, and Twitch.
ROCOrooters will be available during Saturday’s performance, offering a one-of-a-kind music education and childcare experience tailored for young concertgoers. Children will enjoy a fun-filled music lesson, a trip into the concert hall, and up to 5 hours of supervision by certified childcare professionals, while caregivers enjoy the concert and a date night! Following Saturday’s concert at 7:30 p.m. is The Season of the Senses Soirée at ARTECHOUSE Houston—an immersive celebration of art, music, and technology featuring interactive installations, culinary experiences, and a special appearance by guitar legend Steve Vai.
