Project Row Houses (PRH) presents “Somewhere I Read,” a series of listening groups focused on the themes of listening to and hearing Black Geographies. In conjunction with Tia-Simone Gardner’s Round 48 installation “The Black Power Station,” the listening groups will hear an audio recording of the essay “Mathematics Black Life” by Black Feminist Geographer Katherine McKittrick. The event will take place on Wednesday, December 12 and again on Wednesday, February 13, 2019 at “The Black Power Station” (2515 Holman St.).

Attendees will have the opportunity to openly discuss the following question posed by McKittrick: How do we think and write and share as de-colonial scholars and foster a commitment to acknowledging violence and undoing its persistent frame, rather than simply analytically reprising violence?

Listeners will be given an audio text to listen to ahead of the meeting. There will be a facilitated discussion on the text, guided by Tia-Simone Gardner and local Houston artists who also work with archival material and questions of geography.

Gardner’s “The Black Power Station” is a digital audiobook archive and mobile sound installation that highlights authors of African descent whose works were published before 1923, but have fallen out of print.

Round 48: Beyond Social Practice’s site-specific installations highlight the critical work that artists play in shaping and framing socio-political issues while demonstrating their ties to various social justice movements and strategies. Round 48 is on display through Sunday, February 17, 2019.
