Out of the Dark

Saturday, May 11, 2019 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm

Our season began with black darkness and will close with white light; colors of high contrast. Axiom Quartet’s “Out of the Dark” is a journey from the dark into the light with works by three celebrated living composers: Terry Riley, Steve Reich, and Arvo Pärt. Terry Riley’s G-Song, a piece written for Kronos Quartet in 1980, is a piece with jazz improvised origins. It is also a work with never stopping momentum that creates a sense of travel, and a relentless minor mode that evokes a lament-like pathos. Fratres by Arvo Pärt is one of the most recognizable pieces of music from the 20th century. In it, Pärt juxtaposes the symbolic stillness of the universe with the frantic struggle of the human life and ends with the luminous realization of peace. Lastly, Axiom will perform Steve Reich’s Different Trains for String Quartet and pre-recorded tape. This Grammy-award winning work deals with Reich’s Jewish heritage and is a meaningful continuation of Reich’s signature minimalist style.
