Transitioning in the Therapy Room

Friday, April 12, 2019 @ 9:00 am - 12:30 pm

$20 – $25

What happens when a fundamental, powerfully suppressed truth is finally spoken out loud? Join us for this ongoing series exploring LGBTQ+ identity.

Discover what is beneficial and growth-producing for clients who present as struggling with gender identity. Using a case study of one woman’s (Lori Fox) transsexual experience and her clinician’s (Barbra Getz) introspective therapeutic approach, we will follow their journey from the beginning to the eventual relief of cognitive dissonance. We will study the methods used at different stages, which included artwork, dreamwork, body work, and group work. Imperative to the process was engaging the shadow. We will examine issues of interpersonal relationships, shame, loss, familial rejection, spirituality, and sexuality.

Generously underwritten by Debbie Wernet.

Lori Fox is president and founder of Lori Fox LGBTQ Business/Diversity Consulting, where she works with leaders of corporations and non-profit organizations on workplace culture issues, particularly transgender inclusion in the workplace. As a transgender woman, Lori has spent the past twenty years working diligently on her personal therapeutic journey.

Barbra McCoy Getz, LCSW, works as a psychotherapist in private practice, specializing in helping women and transgender clients. She has led presentations and trainings for corporations, social service agencies, and educational institutions to promote healthy communication between the transgender population and the community at large. She believes that mind, body, and spirit are connected and that the study of each enhances understanding of the others and contributes to the overall well-being of her clients.
