QFest Presents BPM: An Observance of World AIDS Day

Sunday, December 3, 2017 @ 3:00 pm - 6:00 pm

In observance of WORLD AIDS DAY, QFest proudly presents BPM (Beats Per Minute), winner of the Grand Prix at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival. Set during the early 1990’s after a decade of devastating loss of life to AIDS, a group of young ACT UP-Paris members aggressively mobilized to bring attention to France’s AIDS crisis, combatting politically motivated resistance from the French government, greedy pharmaceutical companies, and a still very homophobic public. Director Robin Campillo draws from semi-autobiographical experiences to expertly craft France’s official foreign language Oscar submission. Variety says “[BPM] compellingly combines elegy, tragedy urgency, and a defiant euphoria.”

Ticketing: $10 General Admission online or at the door, $5 Student/Senior door only with valid ID

Parking: West Lot 4 will be available for paid parking, street parking in the neighborhoods across from Rice Cinema is also available

Immediately following the screening, Guava Lamp and QFest are proud to be collaborating with Steven Evans, artist, writer, curator, and Executive Director of FotoFest to commemorate WORLD AIDS DAY. Inspired by his conceptual book, The Number One Song in Heaven, Steven has curated a collection of songs that capture the spirit and resilience of our community during the devastation wrought upon us by the AIDS crisis. Bringing the music alive will be DJ ESTEFF, who will bring her extensive collection of vinyl to capture the era from which so many of these songs were first heard and danced to in gay clubs of the time.

Guava Lamp is located at 570 Waugh Dr., Houston, TX 77019.

Please join us for this very special day to celebrate those who fought with their lives to bring our entire community to a time and place in which treatments such as PrEP, PEP and even Treatment as Prevention point us to a foreseeable future in which AIDS can and will be eventually eradicated.
