Opening: Sergio Prego + Gabriel Martinez

Friday, October 27, 2017 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Join us as we celebrate the first major U.S. museum exhibitions of Spanish sculptor Sergio Prego and Houston-based artist Gabriel Martinez.

The New York-based artist Sergio Prego (b. 1969 San Sebastian, Spain) creates unfamiliar perceptual and spatial situations in order to interrogate our contemporary realm of experience. His exhibition on view at the Blaffer, “Rose-colored Drift/To the Students,” comprises new, commissioned work produced specifically for the museum galleries, including inflatable structures, sculptures in concrete and resin, and works on paper, as well as a selection of videos.

Gabriel Martinez (b. 1973 Alamogordo, New Mexico) digs into the relationship between art, public space, and collective memory in order to uncover lost social histories. Wandering through the narrow shoulders of car-centric cities, Martinez operates as a gleaner in a wasteland, rummaging through glass, bricks, trash, and signage. “Everything Turns Away Quite Leisurely” is his first museum presentation.

The exhibitions are curated by Javier Sánchez Martínez, Cynthia Woods Mitchell Curatorial Fellow at the Blaffer Art Museum.

Admission is free and open to the public!
