HOUSTON – METdance presents the third concert in its 2015-2016 performance season – a celebration of the nonprofit’s 20th anniversary in Houston’s vibrant arts community.
In honor of two decades of captivating performances, groundbreaking choreography and educational outreach, the “Celebrating 20!” season includes retrospective works as well as new works showcasing the company’s fusions of classical and contemporary dance.
The third show in the series, “DUO,” is slated for Valentine’s Day weekend, at 8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 12 and Saturday, Feb. 13 and at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Feb 14 at Spring Street Studios, 1824 Spring Street, 77007. Tickets cost $30 or $50 per couple. Seating is limited.
Back by popular demand, “DUO” is an intimate evening of duets from the METdance repertoire.
The artists of METdance will celebrate and explore various relationships in an up-close setting, making the one-hour show a perfect way to celebrate Valentine’s day.
“Every year my husband and I go out to dinner for Valentine’s Day,” artistic director Marlana Doyle said. “I thought people need to have something else to do besides dinner – and we came up with DUO.”
This will be the second year METdance will the show. “With DUO, what I was trying to do was to get the company to do something more intimate,” Doyle said of last year’s inaugural performance. “We always dance as an ensemble. I wanted to challenge the dancers to work one-on-one for a change.”
The show features works by Robert Battle, artistic director of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre, as well as premieres by Oliver Halkowich of the Houston Ballet and former METdance company member Terrill Mitchell.
“It’s a perfect date night,” Doyle said. “It’s just a fun way to spend the evening. Enjoy a wonderful night of dance and support the arts.”
An additional performance, “DUO too,” will be performed by the MET too Youth Company, a non-competitive training troupe. The performance is at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 13 at Spring Street Studios. Tickets are $10.
The “Celebrating 20!” season continues with “Honored Guests,” slated for 8 p.m. on Friday, April 8 at Wortham Center Cullen Theatre, 510 Texas Ave., 77002. Tickets range from $15 to $35 per person.
The fifth program in the season is a one night only performance “MET too Youth Company Spring Concert” at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, May 20 at Midtown Arts and Theatre Complex, 3414 La Branch St., 77004. Tickets are $20.
The METdance season concludes with “Sizzling Summer Dance” at 8:30 p.m. on Friday, June 3 at Miller Outdoor Theatre, 6000 Hermann Park Dr., 77030.
